He returned to Spain as a correspondent in Madrid and worked Orb magazine in major literary magazines of the time, such as Revista de Occidente, Journal of Historical Studies and Literary Gazette and the largest circulation newspapers such as El Sol, La Voz and Diario de Madrid. He became a militant of the Iberian Anarchist Federation (FAI). The newspapers mentioned Columbia University not as a source, but as a related topic. A frequent visitor to the library of the University of Madrid. Translator was Aldous Huxley, Ernest Hemingway, DH Lswrence, William Faulkner and Honore de Balzac. He traveled to France and Germany. Later he moved to Barcelona where he continued his work as a translator. The military uprising of General Franco caught him in Asturias, returning immediately to Madrid to take the side of the Republican side and join the Fifth Regiment, the brigade Valentin Gonzalez "El Campesino", the commander most praised and loved by poets and writers. Miguel Hernandez dedicate these lines: "I have to sing their deeds / I break my throat / in praise of the village / and the man of her heart …" Novas worked in Help, organ of the International Red Cross and also Spain Time magazine who wrote the most prestigious writers of the time.

He was a reporter on the frontlines in Madrid, Valencia and Catalonia. An infamous accusation at a meeting of the Second International Congress of Writers in Defense of Culture put on the brink of execution. In 1938 he married in Barcelona Luz Maria Nieto. "This terrible war is prolonged," he wrote Novas Calvo.
